History
Haas Seed Processing began its operation in 1974 with construction of a new cleaning facility. It is still a family run company originally owned and operated by LeRoy and Carol Haas. Presently daughter Susan and her husband David operate the business with LeRoy and Carol staying on as consultants. Our facility at the beginning was certified to process, and bag Certified and registered seed under the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association. A lot of the seed was grown on our farm which included oats, wheat, barley, rye, and soybeans. As the business grew we also contracted with other farmers to grow seed for us. All of the seed was either retailed to area farmers or wholesaled to various seed dealers or companies in southern Minnesota. We also do a large volume of custom processing for seed companies along with seed dealers and farmers.
In 1985 we started to get interest from a couple of companies wanting us to process Non-GMO and organic products for them. It was not a lot to start with but it was added income for the business. About the time GMO or roundup soybeans started to come into the picture and eventually begin to dominate the seed market we as conventional growers had to restructure our operation. We were not going to get involved with roundup so we chose to expand in NON-GMO and Organic seed and processing which is the majority of our business today. We are still growing, processing, and marketing conventional soybeans along with the small grains like wheat, oats, barley, etc.
In 1995 we expanded the facility by adding a completely enclosed bin complex enabling us to load and unload product inside the building. It includes 12 overhead hopper bins with a capacity of 1100 bushel each. A 65 ft. electronic truck scale was installed below the bins to make it easier to load out bulk product. Another air screen machine and spirals were also installed almost doubling our capacity.
Our cleaning equipment includes air screen machines, gravity separator, spirals, length grader and destoner. We are able to package product in small bags, tote bags, bulk containers or into hopper trailers. Our warehouse is large enough to do short term storage if required. Currently we are certified with MCIA and organic certified with OCIA, JAS, NOP, and EC (EU.) |
